From the Journals: DAY 15

Coach
Double Spring Gap Shelter - Newfound Gap: 10.7 mi
Started hiking in the snow with several inches on the ground @ 8:06am. Boots were still soaked along with most of my hiking clothes. Basically, we got out of the Smokies before the really bad snow hit. Ran into a Ridge Runner, who we told about Spring Breakers we shared the shelter with.
Professor
Hiked out of the snow- taking a Zero Day in Knoxville tomorrow.

  1. Glad they have amazing equipment & clothing that keeps you warm (enough to stay alive) when wet. Folks, these are really tough/dangerous conditions. We learned later that the spring breakers had to be rescued. Professor and Coach told a Ridge Runner about their plight and he called it in to the rangers who found the group the next morning in a state of growing hypothermia. They wrapped the students in plastic cling wrap and walked them out just in time.

  2. All of the guys preparation really paid off, the Spring Break kids obviously were not prepared. Could have been a real sad story.
